Our History:

What started as a simple idea between two brothers has quickly grown into one of Toronto’s most impactful grassroots sports initiatives. The story of The Downtown Softball League is about more than just beer league softball; it is about community, competition, and a shared commitment to fighting food insecurity in our city.

The First Pitch (2024)

In 2024, the leage launched the league with a clear vision: bring people together for the love of the game and use that energy to make a tangible difference in Toronto.

Starting with one diamond at Little Norway Park, the inaugural season saw 10 teams take the field. The league established a foundational charitable partner: all proceeds would support the Daily Bread Food Bank.

The Canada Day Classic was launched on July 1st, bringing over 90+ players together for a day of celebration and softball in support of the DBFB.

That first season was a resounding success, raising $13,000 to help fight food insecurity across the city.

Growth and GIVING (2025)

Building on the momentum of the rookie season, 2025 marked a year of significant expansion. Word of the league’s atmosphere and mission spread, necessitating an expansion to the East End in Greenwood Park to accommodate the growing interest.

The league expanded to 16 teams, bringing in more players, more excitement, and more money for the foodbank. Through the dedication of our players and organizers, we raised $19,000+ in our second year.  The Canada Day Classic and Saturday Night Drop-Ins also saw over 150+ players join the league.

This commitment to social good did not go unnoticed. In 2025, the league was honored to receive the Daily Bread Food Bank Community Leader Award, a testament to the collective effort of every player, commissioner, and volunteer involved.

Looking Ahead

As we look toward the future, the League shows no signs of slowing down. With plans to expand further, add more teams, and increase our fundraising goals, we remain dedicated to our roots: playing hard, having fun, and supporting the Daily Bread Food Bank!
